# Bird Abode Shelving System The Ferma Birdhouse is Designed for Avian and Human Use By Michael Hines | Published 2011-12-23 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ferma-birdhouse References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2011/12/20/skeletal-screen-wall/) & [sholk](http://www.sholk.com/) If you're looking to get a little more use out of your backyard birdhouse, then you need to check out the Ferma birdhouse. The Ferma birdhouse was designed by Michael Sholk to double as a piece of furniture for its human creators. Sholk's design reinvents the birdhouse completely, changing it from a little house designed to be hung from a tree to a small abode with slots for poles. The poles are lengthy and use the birdhouses as connectors. Inventive owners can design a [shelving structure or table](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/qurv) using several Ferma birdhouses. Allowing humans to benefit from having a birdhouse may very well be the perfect way to get more people to start [putting up birdhouses in their backyards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-roost). At the very least, the Ferma birdhouse will encourage existing birdhouse owners to be more creative. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.3/10 - Popularity: 1% | Activity: 1% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Pets](https://www.trendhunter.com/pets) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Multi-functional Designs:** Designing products that can serve multiple purposes, like the Ferma birdhouse that also functions as furniture for humans, can create new markets and appeal to eco-conscious consumers. - **Eco-friendly Adaptations:** By incorporating eco-friendly materials into birdhouse design, companies can tap into the growing market of environmentally conscious consumers while providing safe and sustainable habitats for birds. - **Creative DIY Solutions:** The Ferma birdhouse can inspire creative DIY projects that involve birdhouses and can lead to a new market of birdhouse accessories and furniture. ### Where This Applies - **Home Decor:** The Ferma birdhouse can be positioned as a unique home decor item that also supports wildlife, appealing to a broad range of customers looking for both style and sustainability. - **Outdoor Furniture:** Expanding on the Ferma birdhouse concept, outdoor furniture companies could create larger furniture pieces that support birdhouses and offer multi-functional designs for consumers looking to create backyards that are both stylish and wildlife-friendly. - **Eco-friendly Products:** The Ferma birdhouse can be positioned as an eco-conscious product that promotes sustainability, encouraging companies across a range of industries to create their own environmentally friendly products. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Home Exterior Nesting Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/numbird.md) - [Educational Linoleum Birdhouses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elvi-birdhouse.md) - [Birdhouse-Integrated Address Signs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/our-common-house.md) - [Highly Functional Bird Feeders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ori-bird.md) - [Modernism Birdhouse Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dwellings-project.md) - [Dual-Function Play Swings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/birddy.md) - [Sustainable Bird House Feeders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bamboo-bird.md) - [Dual-Camera Birdhouses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/birdfy-nest.md) - [Birdhouse-Resembling Narrow Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-birdhouse.md)
