# Kitchen-Focused Dwellings The Family Playground Allows the Kitchen to Take Center Stage By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-10-29 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/family-playground References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/taiwanese-home-kitchen-takes-stage/) & [facebook](https://www.facebook.com/IvanHouseDesign) House Design Studio recently completed 'The Family Playground' residence in Kaohsiung city, Taiwan. Instead of revolving around a living area, the home effectively shifts the layout's focus by featuring the [traditional Taiwanese kitchen](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/your-greenhouse-is-your-kitchen) as its central hub. A massive gray island rests on top of a cheerful yellow base, which acts as punch of color to the otherwise neutral-toned space. [Mismatched industrial-looking chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glassbrick-apartment) surround the island, achieving a diverse look and feel. The architects were creative when it came to dividing the [open-concept space](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cobble-hill-townhouse), using a plumbing-pipe-turned-screen that also functions as a shelf. A large glass cabinet is another storage-like piece of furniture, albeit one that is transparent, allowing light to be distributed evenly throughout the home. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.9/10 - Popularity: 64% | Activity: 46% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Kitchen-focused Design:** Emphasizing the kitchen as the central hub in a home layout presents opportunities for innovative kitchen solutions and appliances. - **Diverse Seating:** Using mismatched industrial-looking chairs creates a unique and eclectic dining experience, offering opportunities for furniture customization and personalization. - **Creative Space Dividers:** Incorporating creative and multi-functional space dividers, such as plumbing-pipe-turned-screens, opens up possibilities for customizable room layouts and efficient use of space. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Kitchen Design:** With the kitchen taking center stage, there's potential for disruption in kitchen design, from innovative layouts to smart appliances and storage solutions. - **Furniture Design:** The use of mismatched chairs to create an eclectic dining experience highlights the opportunity for furniture designers to create customizable and personalized seating options. - **Interior Design:** Incorporating creative space dividers and transparent storage furniture presents a chance for interior designers to explore new ways to optimize room layouts and enhance natural light distribution. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Playful-Focused Polish Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/znamy-si.md) - [Family Life-Focused Modern Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pacific-house.md) - [Kid-Friendly Kitchen Stations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/studio-eggi.md) - [Modern-Updated Traditional Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/skip-house.md) - [Coastal View Island Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cape-drive-residence.md) - [Playful Apartment Makeovers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/onda-apartment.md) - [Ai-Powered Recipe-Generating Appliance](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-kitchen-cosmo.md) - [Redesigned Curved Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/taichung-apartment.md) - [Adaptive Family Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/no-ordinary-house.md)
