The [University of Akron](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/candycollect) with Dr. Jun Hu has created [contact lens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diabetic-eye-disease) that may eliminate using needles to [testing blood sugar levels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/noninvasive-glucose-monitoring) for individuals with diabetes. These contacts change color using a sugar sensing chemical to alert individuals when their blood sugar levels are low. Individuals will not notice any difference between the color-changing pair and their regular contacts. The University of Akron has created a software so individuals can read their sugar concentration with their camera on their smartphone by simply taking a picture of their eye. This entire method is much simpler because it only requires a smart phone and these contacts. This potentially ground breaking solution may be a huge step towards improving the lives of those individuals living with diabetes. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.9/10 - Popularity: 34% | Activity: 74% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Unique](https://www.trendhunter.com/unique) > [Inventions](https://www.trendhunter.com/inventions) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Color-changing Contact Lenses:** 'Eye Candy for Diabetics' may eliminate using needles for blood sugar testing in individuals with diabetes by using contact lenses that change color to alert low blood sugar levels. - **'eye Candy for Diabetics' Software:** The University of Akron's software allows individuals with diabetes to read their sugar concentration by taking a picture of their eye with a smartphone, simplifying the monitoring process. - **Simplifying Diabetes Management:** The development of color-changing contact lenses and smartphone software offers a potentially groundbreaking solution, making diabetes management much simpler and improving the lives of those with the condition. ### Who This Affects Most - **Healthcare:** The color-changing contact lenses and accompanying software present a disruptive innovation opportunity in the healthcare industry by revolutionizing blood sugar monitoring for individuals with diabetes. - **Technology:** The integration of smartphone technology and contact lenses with sugar sensing chemicals presents an exciting innovation opportunity in the technology industry for improving diabetes management. - **Eyewear:** The development of color-changing contact lenses for diabetic individuals creates a disruptive opportunity in the eyewear industry, catering to a specific demographic with unique needs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Connected Insulin Injection Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-insulin-pen-caps.md) - [Self-Adjusting Insulin Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/insulin-system.md) - [AI-Driven Diabetes Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diabetespro.md) - [Spiralled Shape Contact Lenses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spiral-diopter.md) - [Glucose-Managing Diabetes Apps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ohsu.md) - [Portable AI-Powered Healthcare Devices](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aipowered-healthcare.md) - [AR-Enabled Contact Lenses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mojo-vision.md) - [Myopia-Focused Contact Lenses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/myopia-control.md) - [Adaptive Eyewear Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bio-lens.md)
