# Gameboards for Extreme Conditions New Wave Chess & Checkers By Elsa Blaine | Published 2008-07-14 | Unique Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/extreme-conditions-gameboard-new-wave-chess-checkers References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/) & [paradoxyproducts](http://www.paradoxyproducts.com/NewWave_Chess_Checkers.html) The New Wave chess & checkers board, created by Paradoxy Products, is a simple but ingenious design. The game board is made of an 8-3/4” square of corrugated board with the checkers and 'royalty figures' printed on pieces of flat clear plastic. The game pieces slide into slots and only move when you move them, no unwanted sliding around or blowing over in a gust of wind. The pieces fold down so the entire game board can store flat. The makers say, “New Wave Chess & Checkers is highly portable and can be played anywhere, indoors or outdoors. “Extreme” chess or checkers can even be played during an earthquake!” ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.7/10 - Popularity: 27% | Activity: 17% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Unique](https://www.trendhunter.com/unique) > [Inventions](https://www.trendhunter.com/inventions) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Portable Gaming:** Opportunity to create innovative and durable gameboards that can be played in various extreme conditions. - **Adaptive Game Pieces:** Opportunity to design game pieces that can securely fit into slots and resist unwanted movement. - **Versatile Gaming:** Opportunity to develop multi-functional game boards that can be used for both chess and checkers. ### Who This Affects Most - **Gaming Accessories:** Potential for creating and selling specialized game boards and pieces for extreme conditions. - **Outdoor Recreation:** Opportunity for businesses to cater to outdoor enthusiasts by offering durable and portable gaming options for extreme conditions. - **Emergency Preparedness:** Opportunity to provide gaming solutions that are resilient during natural disasters or emergencies. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Rollable Chess Boards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rollup-chess-board.md) - [Magnetic Portable Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ventureboard.md) - [Intelligent Portable Board Games](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/eifplay.md) - [Flat-Pack Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jigsaw-chess-set.md) - [Inclusively Designed Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dot-chess.md) - [Beautifully Artful Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dune-chess-set.md) - [AI-Powered Chessboard Kits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gochess.md) - [Luxurious Luggage Chess Boards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rimowa-6.md) - [Incredibly Elegant Chess Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elevated-chess-set.md)
