# Abstract Modular Furniture The Explosion Cabinet by Sebastian Errazuriz Abstractly Opens Up By Meghan Young | Published 2014-07-22 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/explosion-cabinet-by-sebastian-errazuriz References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2014/07/22/the-explosion-cabinet-by-sebastian-errazuriz/) & [meetsebastian](http://www.meetsebastian.com/) The Explosion Cabinet is a piece of furniture that introduces a bit of adventure into the home. Although it is not as comical or cartoonish as another [Explosion Cabinet](http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/explosion-cabinet) that made headlines a few years ago, it certainly opens with a burst rather than a tamer and more traditional door. Designed by Sebastian Errazuriz, the Explosion Cabinet was recently acquired by the [Carnegie Museum of Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/3d-knitting-machine1) (CMOA). When closed up, it looks like a [simple credenza](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/suprematist-bureau). Yet when people pull on either or both ends, it becomes a [sculptural interpretation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cromatica) of a big blast. It is finished with transparent glass sidewalls to provide a glimpse inside this intriguing but staid box. Surprising and provocative, the Explosion Cabinet shows that nothing is ever what it seems. People should always expect the unexpected. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.6/10 - Popularity: 100% | Activity: 89% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Abstract Modular Furniture:** The Explosion Cabinet by Sebastian Errazuriz Abstractly Opens Up - **Surprising Design Elements:** The Explosion Cabinet challenges traditional furniture designs with its unexpected burst-open feature. - **Interactive Home Decor:** The Explosion Cabinet engages users by transforming from a simple credenza to a sculptural interpretation of a big blast. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Design:** The Explosion Cabinet exemplifies the potential for disruptive innovation in the furniture design industry by redefining functionality and aesthetics. - **Art and Museum:** The acquisition of the Explosion Cabinet by the Carnegie Museum of Art highlights the potential for disruptive innovation in the art and museum industry by embracing unconventional and thought-provoking pieces. - **Home Decor:** The Explosion Cabinet presents opportunities for disruptive innovation in the home decor industry by introducing interactive and visually striking elements into traditional home furnishings. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Minimal Four-Legged Wooden Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/exposure-cabinet.md) - [Dynamic Sculptural Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-transformation-table.md) - [Sandbox-Like Modular Storage Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-storage-cabinet1.md) - [Abstract Jigsaw-Like Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spectator-shelf.md) - [Modular Configured Office Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cabinet.md) - [Thoughtful Wheeling Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cabinet-on-wheels.md) - [Volcanic Rock-Inspired Cabinet Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tuff-pencil-cabinet.md) - [Dynamic Joint Furniture Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/please-sit-for-the-alternate-ending.md) - [Adaptive Furniture Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/expand-furniture.md)
