Originally created for first responders, the camera's concept was so attractive to police deparments that 100 copies were distributed for use across the U.S. The Explorer camera looks like a softball covered in a thick foam padding that allows it to withstand impact. It has one camera within and [six outside-facing screens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moon-walker-multi-cam). Once thrown inside, it takes a few pictures each second and pieces them together into a [360-degree panoramic image](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/insta360-x4-air) that can be viewed on a smartphone. The innovation here is the incredibly short time it takes for the camera to create that image -- just a few seconds compared to a standard minute. The Explorer camera provides its own Wi-Fi, as not every [life-threatening situation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/timeli-flashlight) will have wireless Internet. This camera changes the world of policing, adding a new technology that can keep both citizens and police safer. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.7/10 - Popularity: 28% | Activity: 45% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Gadgets](https://www.trendhunter.com/gadgets) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **360-degree Panoramic Imaging:** The short time it takes for the camera to create a 360-degree panoramic image presents an opportunity for disruptive innovation in virtual reality and immersive entertainment. - **Throwable Cameras:** The concept of throwable cameras opens up possibilities for disruptive innovation in the surveillance industry, enabling safer data gathering in dangerous situations. - **Wireless Self-contained Devices:** The self-contained Wi-Fi capability of the Explorer camera suggests disruptive innovation opportunities in the Internet of Things (IoT) space, enabling connectivity in remote or emergency situations. ### Where This Applies - **Law Enforcement:** The throwable policing cameras have the potential to disrupt the law enforcement industry by providing officers with real-time situational awareness in high-risk environments. - **Technology Hardware:** The development of throwable cameras opens up innovative opportunities in the technology hardware sector, offering enhanced imaging solutions for various applications beyond law enforcement. - **Emergency Services:** The self-contained wireless capabilities of the Explorer camera can disrupt the emergency services industry by providing first responders with immediate access to critical information in hazardous situations. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Rugged Throwable Ground Drones](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/teledyne-flir-firstlook.md) - [Animal-Indexing Camera Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xplra-10.md) - [Paintball-Shooting Security Cameras](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paintcam-home-security-system.md) - [Advanced Body-Worn Cameras](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/advanced-bodyworn-camera.md) - [Rugged Field Professional Cameras](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ricoh-ricoh360-theta-a1.md) - [Movement-Analyzing Security Cameras](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ola-2-security-camera.md) - [Point-and-Shoot-Inspired Action Cams](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sony-cybershot.md) - [Wide-Angle Lens Action Cams](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xiaomi-mi-action-360.md) - [Bike-Mounted Cyclist Safety Cameras](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cyclist-camera.md)
