# Origami-Inspired Seating The Exo Chair Mimics the Folding of Paper and the Rigidity of Sculpture By Amelia Roblin | Published 2018-09-03 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/exo-chair References: [competition.adesignaward](https://competition.adesignaward.com/design.php?ID=60599) & [behance.net](https://www.behance.net/gallery/55369985/EXO-chair-project-16-in-DESIGN-MARATHON) The Exo Chair offers a comfortable seat and backrest, but aside from these features, the object looks rather unlike your standard chair. When viewed straight on, it appears to be planar and flat; the side angle flaunts its curved folds and [unconventional structure](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experiment-chair); meanwhile, from above, it looks like a framed circular cushion. The piece is smooth and soft, covered in high quality upholstery and keeps its form with a [sturdy construction of steel and plywood](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mt-chair). Designer Svilen Gamolov worked to rethink the shape that a chair can take, while still fulfilling its function. He was inspired by the smooth and clean lines of contemporary sculpture, as well as the [clever folding patterns of origami](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fold-stool). The result is a functional and beautiful piece, available in a range of chic color combinations that makes the Exo Chair the perfect addition to a modern dining or office space. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.9/10 - Popularity: 65% | Activity: 44% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Origami-inspired Furniture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore the application of origami folding techniques in various furniture designs to create unique and functional pieces. - **Minimalist Sculptural Furniture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Create furniture that combines the clean lines and aesthetic appeal of contemporary sculpture with functional and comfortable seating options. - **Modular Seating Solutions:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop seating designs that can be easily assembled and disassembled, allowing for flexibility and customization. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Integrate origami-inspired folding techniques and minimalist sculptural elements into the production of furniture for a modern and unique aesthetic. - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporate origami-inspired seating and minimalist sculptural furniture into interior design projects to create visually striking and functional spaces. - **Office Furniture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Rethink the traditional office chair by incorporating origami-inspired folding patterns and minimalist sculptural elements to create ergonomic and stylish seating options. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Origami-Inspired Seating Capsule](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origamiinspired-design1.md) - [Minimal Stackable Chair Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/omega-chair.md) - [Sliding Flatpack Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folio-chair.md) - [Flatpack Ultra-Modular Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nebula-chair.md) - [Structurally Complex Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-arch-chair.md) - [Naturalistic Grass-Inspired Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-flip-chair.md) - [Ultra-Minimalist Folding Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/notch-folding-chair.md) - [High-Quality Flatpack Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pagoda-chair.md) - [Chaotically Natural Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kkochgalam-chair.md)
