# Organic Pencil Portraits Erica Williams Incorporates Naturalistic Elements in her Renderings By Jason Soy | Published 2011-12-19 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/erica-williams References: [artforadults.tumblr](http://artforadults.tumblr.com/post/14455073554/erica-williams-illustrations-seen-on) & [ericawilliamsillustration](http://ericawilliamsillustration.com/) Erica Williams is all about keeping things natural. It comes across in the motifs she uses in many of her [portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portrait-mom), but also in her rendering method as she opts to use pencils, pencil crayons and paint rather than scan her images into a computer to be manipulated digitally. Her devotion to the analog makes her creations stand out from the sea of computer-altered artistry that currently dominates mainstream media. Erica Williams presently works as a freelance artist in Minneapolis. The fantasy and folklore elements found within her pieces lend themselves particularly well to [posters and book illustrations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/anima). I'm incredibly impressed by her ability to get so much utility out of a pencil as she uses it for line work as well as to define value in her subjects and their accessories. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.3/10 - Popularity: 90% | Activity: 90% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 10% men, 90% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Naturalistic Art:** Opportunity for artists to explore traditional mediums and embrace analog methods in a digitally-dominated art market. - **Fantasy and Folklore Illustration:** Demand for illustrations that incorporate fantasy and folklore elements in posters and book covers. - **Handmade Craftsmanship:** Growing appreciation for the authenticity and uniqueness of handmade art and illustrations. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art Supplies:** Opportunity for art supply manufacturers to cater to traditional mediums and tools. - **Publishing:** Demand for illustrators specializing in fantasy and folklore elements for book covers and illustrations. - **Online Art Marketplaces:** Growing market for selling and showcasing handmade illustrations and crafts online. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Vibrantly Colorful Dynamic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kayla-rumpp.md) - [Unique Writing Instruments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/graphite-paintbrush-writing-instrument.md) - [Striking Urban Wildlife Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clare-allin.md) - [Textured Pine Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crayon-pine.md) - [AI Line Drawing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pencilify-ai.md) - [Sculptural Writing Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experimental-pencils.md) - [Custom Pet Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portrait-mom.md) - [Biology-Inspired Porcelain Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shiyuan-xu.md) - [Robotic Portrait Sketches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pankraz-piktograph.md)
