# Cutout Cardboard Portraits Artist Elliot Frantz Carves Famous Figures into an Unusual Canvas By Meghan Young | Published 2013-12-07 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elliot-frantz References: [psfk](http://www.psfk.com/2013/12/cardboard-celebrity-portraits.html) & [facebook](https://www.facebook.com/ElliotFrantz) It is not uncommon to see people pay tribute to some of their favorite celebrity in a unique way, yet Elliot Frantz's choice of medium is pretty impressive. He has turned to cardboard to portray the likeness of Audrey Hepburn, Bob Marley and Humphrey Bogart as well as the 1940s movie poster for 'This Gun for Hire.' What makes this so intriguing is the fact that Elliot Frantz didn't paint on the cardboard, instead he carved into it. Based in Rancho Cucamonga, California, Elliot Frantz essentially cuts out the top bits of the cardboard in order to use the corrugated midsection as the shadowy detail for each portrait. Currently working on commissions for the holiday season, Elliot Frantz's work has enchanted quite a few people. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.4/10 - Popularity: 62% | Activity: 2% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) > [Celebs](https://www.trendhunter.com/celebs) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Cardboard Portraiture:** Creating intricate carved portraits on cardboard offers a unique and visually stunning art form. - **Carving as Medium:** Exploring alternative mediums such as carving can open up new creative possibilities for artists. - **Shadow Detail Artwork:** Using the corrugated midsection of cardboard to create shadowy details adds depth and complexity to artwork. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art and Design:** Artists can adopt cardboard carving techniques to create innovative and eye-catching pieces. - **Craft and DIY:** Crafters and DIY enthusiasts can explore carving techniques on cardboard to create unique and personalized projects. - **Home Decor:** Carved cardboard portraits can be incorporated into home decor as statement pieces or conversation starters. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Stunning Origami Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-portaits.md) - [Miniature Artful Hip-Hop Landmarks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/danny-cortes.md) - [Collectible Historical Figurines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/thrilljoy-pix.md) - [Cardboard Box Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/karton-furniture-collection.md) - [Upcycled Waste Material Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cardboard-furniture-design.md) - [Recycled Guitar Prototypes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cardboard-guitar-1.md) - [Cardboard Box-Transformed Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/box-exhibition.md) - [Laser-Cut Urban Artistry](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/laser-cut-city-maps.md) - [Wooden Identity Art Forms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hughmanity.md)
