# Elephant Sanctuary Domes This Elephant House Features a Wooden Roof and Swimming Pools By Ady Floyd | Published 2015-07-21 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elephant-sanctuary References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2015/07/17/zoo-zurich-elephant-house-markus-schietsch-architekten-domed-wooden-gridshell-roof/) & [lorenzeugster.ch](http://www.lorenzeugster.ch/) This elephant sanctuary combines architecture and landscape into a cohesive 11,000 square foot dome. Swiss firm Markus Schietsch Architekten created this dome for the Zurich Zoo to create a natural feeling and outdoor atmosphere. The [shell-like dome](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blue-ocean-dome) is purely made of wood and there is [grass siding](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/earth-villa) that runs throughout the entire elephant sanctuary. An important part of the habitat is the multiple swimming pools to allow the animals a play area, which also enhances the naturalistic feeling. The dome is connected to an [outdoor arena](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/osmanthus-moon) that allows the creatures free range to explore and lounge in both indoor and outdoor settings at their choosing. The dome itself perfectly reflects a turtle shell because it varies in height to reveal large or small windows that range from the ground to the roof. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.2/10 - Popularity: 83% | Activity: 65% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Wooden Dome Structures:** An opportunity for architects and designers to explore sustainable and natural building materials for various applications. - **Animal-centric Architecture:** A chance for architects to create innovative spaces that prioritize the well-being and natural behavior of animals. - **Integration of Indoor and Outdoor Spaces:** An avenue for designers to develop environments that seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor experiences for both humans and animals. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Architecture:** Architects and firms can embrace the use of wood and animal-centric design principles to create sustainable and innovative structures. - **Zoos and Wildlife Parks:** Zoos and wildlife parks can explore the implementation of animal-centric architecture to improve animal welfare and visitor experiences. - **Landscape Design:** Landscape designers can assist in the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces to create harmonious environments that benefit both humans and animals. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Forest Sanctuary Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sadowski-house.md) - [Dolphin-Shaped Tranquil Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dolphin-villa.md) - [Nature-Inspired Geometric Office Domes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dzome.md) - [Geodesic Dome Dog Beds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/domehome-dog-bed.md) - [Dome-Like Futuristic Desert Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hata-dome.md) - [Dome-Style School Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/al-fanar.md) - [Natural Landscape-Surrounding Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/under-the-rain-trees.md) - [Circus Tent-Inspired Holiday Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-circus.md) - [Floating Duck Shelters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nesting-plan-vi-call-duck.md)
