With her latest project, titled 'Little Stories,' German photographer Elena Helfrecht creates images that are dark, yet delicate, and which reveal her personal ruminations on matters of life and death in an intimate way.
Helfrecht's body is her instrument, as she uses it to express her innermost thoughts and desires. In every image, there is a sense of morbid fascination, which Helfrecht willingly admits, explaining, "I really fear what comes afterwards – the ending of consciousness, where nothing is left (at least this is what I can’t stop believing)."
Little Stories appears to be an attempt to reconcile our complex, often contradictory feelings about what happens to us after we die. Though Helfrecht doesn't believe in an afterlife, she does believe in the transcendent power of memory, and that's what her photographs hope to serve.
