A past student in the product design program at [Brunel University](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/future-of-work1) in Uxbridge, London, he dropped out in his second year after realizing it wasn't a good fit. That didn't stop Edward Slater from indulging his love of furniture design. A cameraman and editor at a London media startup by day, Edward Slater retreats to his backyard shed at night to create [surreal pieces of furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bio-pop). For instance, his [Wooden Chair](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atypical-chair) has an protruding X on the seat that makes it look very uncomfortable. But it is set on springs that depresses once sat on. Edward Slater's Bedside Stronghold, complete with moats, walls and a drawbridge, is worthy of 'Game of Thrones' fans. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.2/10 - Popularity: 95% | Activity: 82% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Experimental Furniture Designs:** Opportunity for designers to create mind-boggling and entertaining furniture pieces. - **Surreal Furniture:** Potential for creating unique and unconventional furniture designs. - **Backyard Workshop Creations:** Emerging trend of artists and designers creating innovative furniture in their own backyard workshops. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunities in creating unconventional and playful furniture designs. - **Art and Design:** Opportunity for artists and designers to explore and experiment with surreal and mind-boggling furniture creations. - **Media and Entertainment:** Potential for collaborations between furniture designers and media industry to create furniture inspired by popular culture. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Open-Ended Dynamic Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nebil-zaman.md) - [Experimental Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/philipp-aduatz.md) - [Candy-Inspired Laminated Artful Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/n90n.md) - [Suspenseful Statement Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/edgeofyr.md) - [Fantasy Sculptural Furniture Pieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chris-wolston.md) - [Unique Burl-Inspired Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/don-heston-studio.md) - [Conscious Experimental Furniture Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experimental-furniture-design.md) - [Artful Wooden Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knowledge-of-all-dark-things.md) - [Chic Norm-Challenging Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wiggle-collection.md)
