# Feces-Recycling Aquariums This Eco-Friendly Aquarium Has a Poop Pump that Makes Plant Fertilizer By Rahul Kalvapalle | Published 2014-03-12 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ecofriendly-aquarium References: [kickstarter](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/aquasprouts/aquasprouts-aquaponics-self-cleaning-aquarium-and?ref=footer) & [aquasprouts](http://www.aquasprouts.com/) AquaSprouts is an aquarium that converts a simple fish tank into a complex and self-sustaining ecosystem. The aquarium uses aquaponics, a system whereby waste material of aquatic animals is used to fertilize plants. The AquaSprouts aquarium has a pump that sucks fish feces out of the aquarium. Bacteria then convert the fish poop into fertilizer, which lands in the AquaSprouts grow bed and nourishes the plants that grow there. This means that [plants grown on the grow bed](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/izestee) -- which can include lettuce, garlic, spinach, peppers and more -- don't need to be fertilized. Moreover, the fish tank itself never needs to be cleaned thanks to the poop pump. If you want to be even more hands-off, you can attach an [automatic fish-feeder](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/reef-1) to the aquarium -- that way you won't have to worry about feeding the fish, cleaning the tank *or* fertilizing the plants. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.7/10 - Popularity: 21% | Activity: 53% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Health](https://www.trendhunter.com/health) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Aquaponics:** The use of aquaponics systems can disrupt traditional farming methods by creating self-sustaining ecosystems that recycle waste material. - **Eco-friendly Gardening:** The concept of using fish feces as fertilizer in aquariums presents an opportunity for disruptive innovation in the gardening industry with more sustainable and natural approaches to plant nourishment. - **Automated Aquarium Maintenance:** The incorporation of a poop pump and automatic fish-feeder in aquariums offers an opportunity for disruption in the aquarium industry by simplifying maintenance tasks and reducing the need for manual intervention. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Farming:** The aquaponics system utilized in the AquaSprouts aquarium presents a disruptive innovation opportunity in the farming industry by offering a more efficient and sustainable method of plant fertilization. - **Gardening:** The use of fish feces as fertilizer in the AquaSprouts aquarium provides a disruptive innovation opportunity in the gardening industry by promoting eco-friendly and natural gardening practices. - **Aquarium:** The integration of a poop pump and automatic fish-feeder in aquariums can lead to disruptive innovation in the aquarium industry by revolutionizing maintenance and care processes. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [AI Aquarium Water Changers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aquarium-water-changer.md) - [Aquatic Floating Farms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-marine-farm.md) - [Automated Indoor Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-evergrow.md) - [Algae-Powered Air Purifiers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/algenair-aerium.md) - [Accessible Aquarium Lines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aquaready.md) - [Electric Food Recyclers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/foodcycler-eco-3.md) - [App Controlled Indoor Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hydroponic-farm.md) - [Structural Smart Indoor Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/plantafrom-smart-indoor-garden.md) - [Furniture-Inspired Indoor Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/indoor-garden-system.md)
