# Invisible Anti-Piracy Systems The SIDIM Ebook DRM System Efficiently Adds a Secret Watermark By Alexander Lam | Published 2013-06-21 | Business Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ebook-drm References: [psfk](http://www.psfk.com/2013/06/ebook-sharing-tracking.html) & [ukp.tu-darmstadt.de](http://www.ukp.tu-darmstadt.de/research/past-projects/sidim) In an effort to eliminate [ebook piracy](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/encypherai), researchers at the Darmstadt Technical University have created an ingenious [ebook digital rights management system](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/etsy-sellers1). Named SIDIM, or 'Secure Documents using Individual Markers,' the scheme is a low-tech method of discouraging [illegal ebook sharing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/personal-library). SIDIM essentially makes small changes to each book such as the grammar or punctuation in order to assign it to an owner. Since the changes are so subtle, they are undetectable by the user. Distributed texts can be traced back to the original buyer through the subtle changes. Though seemingly secure, there may be a few problems with this scheme. Users could compare copies of their books in order to detect where certain text-watermarks are. In addition, users could add their own changes to further confuse any watermark-detection systems. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.9/10 - Popularity: 5% | Activity: 13% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Business](https://www.trendhunter.com/business) > [Books](https://www.trendhunter.com/books) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Ebook DRM Systems:** Opportunity to develop more advanced and secure ebook digital rights management systems that effectively deter piracy. - **Subtle Watermarking:** Opportunity to explore and improve techniques for adding undetectable but traceable watermarks to digital content. - **Anti-piracy Technology:** Opportunity to innovate and develop new technologies that protect digital content from unauthorized sharing and piracy. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Publishing:** Publishing industry could benefit from investing in advanced ebook DRM systems to protect their digital publications. - **Content Distribution:** Content distribution platforms can capitalize on subtle watermarking techniques to ensure content traceability and discourage piracy. - **Technology Security:** Technology security industry has an opportunity to develop robust anti-piracy technologies to safeguard digital content. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Memory Loss Ink-Fading Books](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/4442-book.md) - [AI Image Watermarking Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/google-deepmind.md) - [Protective Digital Art Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nightshade.md) - [Writing-Friendly Full-Color eReaders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amazon-kindle-scribe-colorsoft.md) - [Chromatic High-Resolution eReaders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocketbook-inkpad-color-3.md) - [Water-Activated Book Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dehydrating-book.md) - [Pocket Smart Readers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aipaper-reader.md) - [Digital Book Libraries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pdfdrive.md) - [Hack-Proof Authentication Chips](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hackproof-chip.md)
