[Google](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/google-find-my-device-network) created a new earthquake detection system that will be released in California. The earthquake detection system functions by using Android smartphones as a seismometer in order to create a detection network. Data collected by smartphones can also be used for Google's search engine to inform users if an earthquake has occurred. The tech giant is also working alongside the [United States Geological Survey](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rfid-tracking-network), as well as the California governor's [Office of Emergency services](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nasa-streaming-service).

Android smartphones can detected seismic activity using accelerometers, which are able to track P-waves that occur before an earthquake. Each time a device detects P-waves, the information is sent to a central server. Following this, the server will evaluate if an earthquake is likely to occur.
