In what could be an environmental, penal and fashion trend, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has created the first chain gang for a specific crime: DUI.
Sheriff Joe is best known for issuing pink underwear to jail inmates and housing them in old military tents. He has made another interesting penal fashion choice, mixing the classic black and white bar pants with a bright pink long sleeve shirt emblazoned with "Clean (ing) and Sober" on the front and "Sheriff D.U.I. Chain Gang" on the back. The gang is tasked with cleaning up roadsides and burying the homeless and indigent, most of whom were alcoholics.
