# Giant Illusion Steps The DUB Staircase is Made Up of 8 Blocks and 16 Steps By Meghan Young | Published 2010-09-25 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dub-staircase References: [plusmood](http://plusmood.com/2010/09/dub-staircase-reinier-de-jong-design/) & [reinierdejong](http://www.reinierdejong.com/) The DUB Staircase may seem like it was constructed for a giant, but it simply relies on clever design and [optical illusions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hooptical). In reality, each of those hugely spaced blocks features two steps in one. Created by Rotterdam-based design studio Reinier de Jong Design, the DUB Staircase is a [sculptural masterpiece](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ladder-series). Strategically designed in a spot where light floods in from above, this abstract design is made even more dramatic. As Plus Mood so succinctly describes, the DUB Staircase is "expressive in shape and modest in colour." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.1/10 - Popularity: 93% | Activity: 83% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Clever Design:** Opportunities for creating products or structures that rely on clever design and optical illusions. - **Optical Illusions:** Potential for leveraging optical illusions to create impactful and visually stunning designs. - **Abstract Sculpture:** Growing demand for abstract sculptural designs that make a dramatic statement. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Disruptive opportunities to incorporate clever design and optical illusions into architectural projects. - **Interior Design:** Potential for incorporating optical illusions into interior design to create visually stunning spaces. - **Art Installations:** Growing market for abstract sculptural designs that capture attention and create a dramatic impact in public spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Concrete Spiral Staircase Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cadenza.md) - [Dynamic Bookend Lighting Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stair-table.md) - [Bold Architectural Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-iron-house.md) - [Dutch Barn Spiralled Staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/julia-van-beuningen.md) - [Reimagined Traditional Library Ladders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/step-by-step-ladder.md) - [Staggered Cubic Skyscrapers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ooda.md) - [Sculptural Experimental Artforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ladder-series.md) - [Sculptural Townhome Staircases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atelier-pierre-thibault-1.md) - [Timbered Passage Stair Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-annex.md)
