# Drowsiness Detector New Car Seat Kicks Your Ass When You Fall Asleep By POPEYE | Published 2007-03-07 | Autos Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drowsiness-seat-detection References: [pinktentacle](http://www.pinktentacle.com/2007/03/smart-car-seat-detects-drowsy-drivers/) Recently the Researchers from the [University of Tokyo](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fufuly), Oita University, the Shimane Institute of Health Science and Delta Tooling, an industrial equipment manufacturer, have developed a prototype [smart car seat](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sensorysoothe) capable of detecting when its occupant is on the verge of falling asleep. The seat features [respiration-monitoring sensors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/incabin-monitoring-system) and pressure sensors that monitor the pulse. The system can identify the physiological changes that occur 10 minutes before a driver actually falls asleep. **Implications** - Industrial engineers are always looking for ways to reduce driver fatalities; distracted and drowsy drivers are among the major causes of traffic collisions. By creating intelligent systems that can detect a driver who's about to drift off, engineers and original equipment manufacturers can help cut unnecessary collisions. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.2/10 - Popularity: 37% | Activity: 50% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Autos](https://www.trendhunter.com/autos) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Driver Fatigue Detection:** Prototype smart car seat capable of detecting when its occupant is on the verge of falling asleep ### Who This Affects Most - **Automotive Safety:** Intelligent systems that can detect driver fatigue can help reduce traffic collisions and improve road safety ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Drunk Driving Detection Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drunk-driving-detection.md) - [Sleep Disorder-Detecting Pajamas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-pajama-top.md) - [Slumber-Inducing Wearables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sleep-devices.md) - [AI Baby Sleep Monitors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/necoron.md) - [Vehicular Child Safety Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/child-safety-system.md) - [Smart Anti-Snore Pillows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/derucci-antisnore-pillow.md) - [Audio Sleep Detection](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-sleep-timer.md) - [AI-Driven Mattress Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aidriven-mattress.md) - [In-Car Stress-Reducing Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/harman-ready-care.md)
