# Turntable Sketching Machines The Howsare 'Drawing Apparatus' is a Musical Drawing Instrument By Jordy E | Published 2012-03-26 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drawing-apparatus References: [wired](http://www.wired.com/underwire/2012/03/hacked-turntables-drawings/) & [roberthowsare](http://roberthowsare.com/rational-aesthetics/drawing-apparatus/) The turntable 'Drawing Apparatus' is the latest project spearheaded by Ohio University MFA student Robert Howsare. A former DJ, Howsare constructed the set from [two vintage turntables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/henry-turntable) he acquired at a garage sale, a purchase that set him back less than $50. The beauty behind this economically sound artistic endeavor is that the turntable model number is irrelevant. The only component influencing the sketching is the [pitch control implement](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/korg), a feature found on almost any turntable, no matter the brand. The geometric images are highly captivating, and very few musicians-turned-artists have used such a tool in the drawing room. By making use of [colored markers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/everglow) in a variety of shapes and sizes, some incredible and perhaps even bizarre art forms may be produced. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.6/10 - Popularity: 24% | Activity: 47% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Musical Drawing Instruments:** Creating drawing tools that incorporate music to generate unique and captivating art forms. - **Economical Art Tools:** Developing affordable art tools from readily available materials to make art accessible for everyone. - **Multimedia Art Forms:** Exploring innovative ways of merging and combining different art forms to generate new expressive media. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art Supplies Industry:** Designing and manufacturing affordable and unconventional art tools that appeal to both professional and amateur artists. - **Music Industry:** Collaborating with artists and designers to create novel musical instruments that inspire and enable new forms of creative expression. - **Multimedia Art Industry:** Fostering new forms of multimedia art by encouraging experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaborations between artists, designers, and technologists. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Architecture-Inspired Turntables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rytm-1.md) - [Color-Changing Eccentric Turntables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-turntable-ii.md) - [Visceral Record Turntables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orbit-kinetic.md) - [Robotic Portrait Sketches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pankraz-piktograph.md) - [Omni-Position Record Players](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/black-wheel-turntable.md) - [Tape Deck Instruments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/magnetic-folklore.md) - [Retro-Modern Turntable Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vertical-turntable-concept.md) - [Color-Changing Record Players](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/turntable-ii.md) - [Modern Sideways Audio Turntables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pp1.md)
