# Polygonal Chess Sets The Drama Chess Set Integrates a Modern Design to Entice Players By Michael Hemsworth | Published 2018-04-27 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drama-chess-set References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2018/04/26/check-out-this-low-poly-high-entertainment-chess-set/) It could be argued that chess isn't necessarily the most popular pastime amongst younger consumers, so the conceptual Drama Chess Set looks to change that by making it more applicable. Boasting a [polygonal design aesthetic](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chess-nyc) that's modern and playful, the [chess set](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gochess-wizard) looks to make Chinese Chess more popular amongst youth to keep the pastime alive rather than fading into obscurity. The set does aways with the [traditional checkerboard design](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mohmaya) in favor of engraved crosses that enable the pieces to be positioned in for a more sturdy experience. The Drama Chess Set is the design work of Lingfang Shen and is the winner of the A' Design Award for 2018 thanks to the premium aesthetic that it puts in focus. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.1/10 - Popularity: 57% | Activity: 27% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Youth Engagement in Chess:** The Drama Chess Set seeks to make Chinese Chess more popular among younger consumers, creating opportunities for engaging youth in the game. - **Modern Chess Set Design:** The polygonal design aesthetic of the Drama Chess Set presents an opportunity for the development of modern and visually appealing chess sets. - **Innovative Chess Board Designs:** The engraved cross design of the Drama Chess Set opens up possibilities for creating more sturdy and unique chess boards. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Toy and Game Industry:** The Drama Chess Set's focus on increasing chess's popularity among youth creates opportunities for toy and game manufacturers to design and produce innovative chess sets. - **Product Design Industry:** The polygonal design of the Drama Chess Set highlights an opportunity for product designers to create visually striking and modern chess sets. - **Woodworking Industry:** The unique engraved-cross design of the Drama Chess Set creates opportunities for woodworking companies to create custom and specialized chess boards. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Ceramic Chess Seating Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chair-chess.md) - [Minimalist Monolithic Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-chess-set.md) - [Incredibly Elegant Chess Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elevated-chess-set.md) - [Celestial Anti-Conflict Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/another-kingdom-light-stage-chess-set.md) - [Beautifully Artful Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dune-chess-set.md) - [Flat-Pack Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jigsaw-chess-set.md) - [Inclusively Designed Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dot-chess.md) - [Minimalist Artful Chessboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tarek-elkassouf.md) - [Architecturally Inspired Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/baku-chess-set.md)
