# Screw-Like Coffins Donald Scruggs Designs Chiral Coffin Concept to Save Grave Space By Meghan Young | Published 2010-08-17 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/donald-scruggs References: [wired](http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/08/chiral-coffin-screws-bodies-in-the-dirt/) & [blogs.discovermagazine](http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/visualscience/2010/08/06/inventor-donald-scruggs-and-the-screw-in-coffin/) Considering that the population seems to double every time I check, Donald Scruggs's chiral coffin concept is morbidly convenient. Looking like one big screw, it's an easy way to not only put the body underground, but also save space. Essentially, Donald Scruggs's coffin actually acts like a screw as well. It twists vertically into the ground. The coffin design was recently granted a patent, so we may be seeing these chiral coffins on the market in the near future. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.9/10 - Popularity: 86% | Activity: 82% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Sustainable Burial:** The chiral coffin concept by Donald Scruggs presents a sustainable alternative for burial, as it saves grave space and allows for vertical burial. - **Space-saving Design:** The screw-like coffin design by Donald Scruggs offers a space-efficient solution for burying bodies, making it ideal for locations with limited burial space. - **Innovative Funeral Products:** The chiral coffin concept by Donald Scruggs represents an example of the growing trend of innovative and unique funeral products. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Funeral Services:** The funeral services industry can embrace the sustainable chiral coffin concept by Donald Scruggs as a disruptive innovation opportunity to provide environmentally-friendly burial options. - **Cemetery Management:** Cemetery managers can explore the space-saving design of screw-like coffins by Donald Scruggs to optimize burial space and accommodate more individuals within limited cemetery grounds. - **Eco-friendly Products:** The eco-friendly and space-saving coffin design by Donald Scruggs has potential for the eco-friendly products industry to offer innovative burial solutions that address limited space and environmental concerns. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Humorous Macabre Office Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/coffin-office-chair.md) - [Coffin-Shaped Engagement Rings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/coffin-shaped-engagement-rings.md) - [Coffin-Shaped Beverage Containers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-casket-cooler.md) - [Coffin-Shaped Ice Cream Tubs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-alchemist-by-jdo.md) - [Expandable Spherical Monolithic Urns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/urna-project.md) - [Tree-Covered Vertical Mausoleum](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hollywood-forever-cemetery.md) - [Twisting CGI-Designed Sideboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookscrew-sideboard.md) - [Brick Volume Cylindrical Mausoleums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shah-muhammad-mohshin-khan-mausoleum.md) - [Life-Size Casket Coolers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/casket-cooler.md)
