# Touch Screen Tablet Canvases Pixar Animator Don Shank's iPad Paintings Are Epic By Renee Ramsarran | Published 2011-01-08 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/don-shanks-ipad-paintings References: [boingboing.net](http://www.boingboing.net/2011/01/06/don-shanks-ipad-pain.html) & [donshank.blogspot](http://www.donshank.blogspot.com/) [Pixar](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pixar-place-hotel) animator Don Shank's [iPad](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/muse-pro) paintings prove that the modern canvas is a brilliant medium for creating artistic pieces. Shank has worked on projects such as 'Ren & Stimpy,' 'The Incredibles' and 'Up,' and for these paintings, he uses his fingers and the [iPad's Brushes tool](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/apple-crayon-pro) to produce his works. Although most of Don Shank's iPad paintings are abstract, he does jestingly refer to some of his pieces as "indoor plein comput-air painting." **Implications** - These iPad paintings are super cool as they give artists the option of playing back their paintings right on the iPad and watch it recreate itself without the artist's hand. The painting's "actions" file can even be compressed to an email and reprinted to be up to six times its size in height and width. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.1/10 - Popularity: 62% | Activity: 22% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Gadgets](https://www.trendhunter.com/gadgets) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Digital Art:** The use of touch screen tablets like the iPad as a medium for creating artistic pieces has opened up new possibilities for digital art. - **Interactive Art:** The ability to play back and recreate a painting on a touch screen tablet allows for interactive art experiences, where viewers can witness the creation process. - **Mobile Creativity:** Touch screen tablets provide artists with a portable and convenient way to create art, allowing for creativity on the go. ### Where This Applies - **Fine Arts:** The fine arts industry can benefit from the adoption of touch screen tablets as a new tool for creating and experiencing art. - **Digital Entertainment:** The digital entertainment industry can explore the use of touch screen tablets as a platform for interactive art and creative experiences. - **Technology:** The technology industry can continue to innovate and improve touch screen tablets to cater to the needs of artists and creative professionals. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Digital Craft Platforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/apple-and-design-miami.md) - [Portable Digital Drawing Pads](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portable-digital-drawing.md) - [Digital Art Displays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/layer-canvas.md) - [Paper-Inspired Drawing Tablets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xencelabs-pen-tablet.md) - [AI-Powered Painting Machines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loklik-ipaint.md) - [Portable Drawing Tablets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/movinkpad-11.md) - [Portable Drawing Tablets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portable-projector-for-kids.md) - [Life-Like 3D Canvases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lumino.md) - [E-Ink Modern Smart Screens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bloomin8-eink-canvas.md)
