# Woven Grass Wooden Seats The Dodai Bench is at Once Simple and Intricate By Meghan Young | Published 2013-01-28 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dodai-bench References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2013/01/26/dodai-benches-by-peter-marigold/) & [petermarigold](http://www.petermarigold.com/) The Dodai Bench is at once simple and intricate. Made out of Igusa, a type of woven grass, and Hiba, wood from a Japanese cypress, it sports a uniform colorway that gives it a minimalistic touch. Nevertheless, the carved details and mat-like surface of the Dodai Bench heightens the basic aesthetics for a piece of furniture that is worthy of being displayed at the exhibition Simple Vision, which is coordinated by [Japan Creative](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/japan-edition-ginza). Designed by Peter Marigold and manufactured by Japanese furniture company [Hinoki Kogei](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nagare-collection), the Dodai Bench was created using a single log that was cut in half. Expertly fashioned, the [woven grass mat](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/woven-chair-designs) that lays on top of the wood can be pulled back to reveal storage underneath. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.7/10 - Popularity: 56% | Activity: 46% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Woven Grass Furniture:** Opportunity for creating unique and eco-friendly furniture using woven grass as a material. - **Minimalistic Design:** Opportunity for designing furniture with clean lines and uniform colorways for a minimalist aesthetic. - **Hidden Storage Solutions:** Opportunity for incorporating hidden storage compartments into furniture pieces for a more functional design. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Opportunity for furniture manufacturers to explore the use of woven grass as an alternative material. - **Interior Design:** Opportunity for interior designers to incorporate minimalistic furniture designs with woven grass elements in their projects. - **Storage Solutions:** Opportunity for companies specializing in storage solutions to integrate hidden storage features into furniture designs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Threshold Bench Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/torii.md) - [Paper Cord-Wrapped Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modern-bench.md) - [Cocoon-Inspired Bench Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gandan-bench.md) - [Japanese Gates-Inspired Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/torii-bench.md) - [Sprouting Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wood-chair-on-grass.md) - [Minimalist Meditative Bench Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pause-bench.md) - [Heirloom Furniture Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/columns.md) - [Industrial Wrapped Plywood Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/indoor-bench.md) - [Elegantly Airy Outdoor Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arch-bench.md)
