New Zealand has just upped its credit for [sci-fi fans](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cocacola-x-star-wars) everywhere. The New Zealand Mint and BBC Worldwide Australia have created Doctor Who coins to celebrate Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary.

The coin, which is a one-ounce silver .999 model features an embossed image of the tardis and a 50th anniversary logo. What’s also unique about the Doctor Who coins is that they come packaged in a specially commissioned 3D model of the tardis, which even makes special noises when you open the door.

The coins are actual legal tender and are worth $2 in the South Pacific Island Niue. New Zealand officials plan to release more Doctor Who coins later in the year featuring the 11 doctors who have been featured in the [longest running sci-fi show](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/star-trek-spirits) in history.
