# Gorgeously Glitched-Out Artwork These Dmetrius Rice Pieces are Vibrant and Spastic By Josh Triantafilou | Published 2012-04-27 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dmetrius-rice References: [lostateminor](http://www.lostateminor.com/2011/02/17/dmetrius-rice/) & [dmetriusriceartwork.blogspot](http://dmetriusriceartwork.blogspot.ca/) LostAtEminor.com contributor Gerry Mak explains that his friend Dmetrius Rice's artwork is inspired by, "video glitches, cartoon hallucinations, and the digital apocalypse." Despite such destructive themes, the renderings are actually quite upbeat and whimsical. Each piece is a [whirling kaleidoscope of colors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/colorama). Lines intersect and run away from one another to produce unusual shapes and patterns. However, there is more to this artwork than aesthetics. At first glance, these pieces seem to be clearly abstract expressionist. With their bright colors, sharp contrasts and [twirling polygonal shapes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ripples-collection), they are reminiscent of Kandinsky paintings. With further though, however, one realizes that the pieces actually quite faithfully depict their subjects; video glitches, cartoon hallucinations and digital apocalypses just happen to look like abstract expressionist paintings for some reason. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.7/10 - Popularity: 47% | Activity: 25% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Glitched-out Artwork:** Discover the trend of artwork inspired by video glitches, cartoon hallucinations, and the digital apocalypse. - **Whimsical Renderings:** Explore the trend of vibrant and spastic artwork that presents destructive themes in an upbeat and whimsical manner. - **Abstract Expressionist Interpretations:** Uncover the trend of artwork that faithfully depicts subjects like video glitches, cartoon hallucinations, and digital apocalypses through abstract expressionist style. ### Who This Affects Most - **Artistic Creations:** The creation of glitched-out artwork presents disruptive innovation opportunities within the artistic industry. - **Graphic Design:** The trend of using vibrant and spastic renderings in graphic design opens up disruptive innovation opportunities for creating visually striking designs. - **Digital Media:** The interpretation of video glitches, cartoon hallucinations, and digital apocalypses through abstract expressionist style introduces disruptive innovation opportunities within the digital media industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Digital-Themed Glitchy Visual Wallpapers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glitch-wallpaper.md) - [Vibrantly Colorful Dynamic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kayla-rumpp.md) - [Digital City-Inspired Art Works](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grand-central-station.md) - [Visually Morphing Muses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glitchy-bitches.md) - [Apocalypse Post Pandemic Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contemporary-urban-art.md) - [Physics-Informed Digital Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/motion-sculpture.md) - [Juxtaposing Digital Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/riflessi.md) - [Digital Archetype Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/christian-rex-van-minnen-1.md) - [Glass Beaded Intricate Artworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/painting-exhibition.md)
