# Melting Ramshackle House Art Alex Chinneck has Turned a Dilapidated Home into an Art Installation By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2013-10-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dilapidated-home References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2013/10/01/from-the-knees-of-my-nose-to-the-belly-of-my-toes-by-alex-chinneck/) & [kentonline](http://www.kentonline.co.uk/thanet_extra/news/why-this-home-is-getting-6724/) Aleck Chinneck has created a new [architectural art installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forest-dancer) that features the [façade of a house](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-house-with-an-inverted-roof) melting away from its structure. Chinneck removed the old façade of the neglected UK home and attached a new one, making sure to leave the top story exposed. The excess of the façade curved away from the house to achieve the “melting” look. This house was slated for renovation into social housing, but movement on the project was very slow, with no plans to begin for over a year. Chinneck took advantage of this dawdling movement by turning the ramshackle home into an art installment titled 'From the Knees of my Nose to the Belly of my Toes.' He states on his site, “I wanted to create something that used the simple pleasures of humor, illusion and theater to create an artwork that can be understood and enjoyed by any onlooker.” Since the façade looks brand new, it’s a shock to see the dilapidated state of the interior from the exposed top story, which was Chinneck’s eventual intention: “I increasingly like that idea of exposing truth and the notion of superficiality.” Once a crumbling home, this building is now a thought-provoking art installment which will remain until the house is converted into social housing next year. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.5/10 - Popularity: 7% | Activity: 1% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Home](https://www.trendhunter.com/home) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Architecture Illusion Art:** Opportunity for artists to reinterpret outdoor and indoor spaces with optical illusion art. - **Social Housing Transformation:** Innovative construction approaches to utilize neglected homes and buildings for social housing initiatives. - **Exposing Hidden Realities:** Creative and unexpected ways to showcase reality through art and design installations for social awareness purposes. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Architecture:** Architecture industry can explore the possibilities of creating more unusual and innovative structures with the use of optical illusion and exposed interior design features. - **Social Housing:** Social Housing industry can leverage art and installations to bring attention to underutilized structures as an opportunity for social housing projects. - **Creative Arts:** Creative Arts industry can collaborate with other industries to create new and meaningful installations for social commentary and awareness. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [Distorted Furniture Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/first-kiss-at-last-light.md) - [Vertically Ruptured Juxtaposing Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tear-away-house.md) - [Optical Illusion Replica Artworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/liberty-science-center.md) - [Physically Looped Canal Boats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/looptheloop-boat.md) - [Abstract Fantasy Home Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/abstract-fantasy-home.md) - [Bespoke London Victorian Terraces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ray-house.md) - [Protest Sand Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bland-castles.md) - [Gas Rig Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/striking-art-installation.md)
