# Innovative Mug Designs for Hot Drinks Heat-Dispersing Fins Make a Cup Handle Unnecessary By Katie Cordrey | Published 2009-01-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/design-innovation-some-like-it-hot-radiator-mug-keeps-beverages-and-hands-w References: [bigcitylittlekitchen](http://www.bigcitylittlekitchen.com/2008/01/04/a-mug-of-marvelous-design/) & [charlesandmarie](http://charlesandmarie.com/lifestyle-gems/quintessentials/epicurean-delights/details/product/radiator-mug-1/?tx_ttproducts_pi1) One of the most satisfying feelings is the warmth from a mug of steaming hot coffee or tea. In fact, I’d say it’s a good part of the pleasure of drinking a hot beverage, especially during the winter. It makes a lot of sense to design a vessel that actually radiates heat without burning its holder. I often thread my fingers under the cup handle in order to get a nice, full grasp. This [bone china mug](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/corcelain) is the brainchild of Stephen Reed who works from London. The repetitive fins are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. They allow heat to dissipate from the cup so that the warmth can be enjoyed without injuring the hands. The fins remind me not only of [industrial radiators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/puffin-drinkware), but of seed pods, making it a great design mix. Reed is a young designer and the same artist who collaborated on an Interactive *WORDPLAY* seating installation for the Bloomberg offices in London. (See below.) His functional art is, for me, an exceedingly fun application of design. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.6/10 - Popularity: 47% | Activity: 52% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Heat-dispersing Mug Designs:** Opportunity to create innovative mug designs that dissipate heat and eliminate the need for a handle. - **Functional Aesthetic Fins:** Trend towards incorporating aesthetically pleasing and functional fin designs in various products, such as mugs, to enhance user experience. - **Creative Industrial Radiator-inspired Designs:** Emerging trend of incorporating industrial radiator-inspired elements in product designs, like mug fins, to provide unique and visually appealing solutions. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Housewares:** Potential for disruptive innovation by designing heat-dispersing mugs that eliminate the need for traditional handles, revolutionizing the housewares industry. - **Kitchenware:** Opportunity for disruptive innovation in the kitchenware industry by creating mug designs with heat-dispersing fins that enhance user comfort and safety. - **Interior Design:** Innovative mug designs incorporating aesthetically pleasing fins can disrupt the interior design industry by offering unique and functional decorative elements for spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Ergonomic Hand-Warming Mugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-hug-cup.md) - [Coffee-Cooling Travel Mugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beverage-tumbler.md) - [Bell-Shaped Coffee Mugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mario-mug.md) - [Candle Coffee Warmers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/warmer-concept.md) - [Desk Thermo Tumblers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alessi-buri-tumbler.md) - [Utensil Holding Mugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/1handmug.md) - [Sensor-Packed Smart Mugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nextmug.md) - [Smart Temperature Control Mugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-temperature-control-technology.md) - [Connected Temperature-Controlled Mugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cera-m14-mug.md)
