# Luxury Steel Box Home on Stilts Delta Shelter By Djemal | Published 2008-01-11 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/delta-shelter References: [oskaarchitects](http://www.oskaarchitects.com/Projects/38/Delta-Shelter) & [oskaarchitects](http://www.oskaarchitects.com/) When you think of the weekend cabin, most people will think of one made from logs, wood, or stone. The [Delta Shelter](http://www.oskaarchitects.com/Projects/38/Delta-Shelter) is the creation of Tom Kundig, of the Seattle architects Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen. The 1,000 square-foot weekend cabin successfully combines art, design, and an elegant living experience, and all from what is basically a ‘steel box on stilts’. The cabin comes complete with 10’ x 18’ shutters, which on the turn of a lever, simultaneously shuts out the outside world. Situated near a river in Mazama, WA, the Delta Shelter has recently been awarded the prestigious Honor Award from the National AIA, thereby, adding a few more plaudits, and officially recognising a architect who continues to echo his art fabrication education and [American West](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wood-for-the-trees) upbringing. Kundig takes the weekend cabin to new levels - literally. As the cabin is situated in an area at risk of flooding, the cabin sits on steel stilts three stories high; with the living area and kitchen (sensibly, as well as aesthetically) occupying the top floor. More forward thinking designs like this will help with any future migration back to the green open spaces of the American West. Did anyone say electricity? ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.2/10 - Popularity: 92% | Activity: 57% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Luxury Steel Box Homes:** The demand for luxury steel box homes like the Delta Shelter is increasing, creating opportunities for innovative designs and construction methods. - **Artful Weekend Cabins:** The trend towards artful weekend cabins is growing, providing opportunities for architects and designers to create unique living spaces with elegant living experiences. - **Innovative Flood-resistant Building Design:** Innovative building designs like the Delta Shelter, which is on stilts due to the risk of flooding, offer disruptive innovation opportunities for architects and designers to create structures that are both beautiful and functional. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture and Design:** The architecture and design industry can capitalize on the trend towards unique, artful weekend cabins and luxury steel box homes. - **Real Estate and Housing:** Real estate and housing industries can benefit from the growing demand for unique and innovative weekend cabins, especially in green open spaces like the American West. - **Construction and Engineering:** The demand for innovative flood-resistant building designs like the Delta Shelter offers opportunities for the construction and engineering industries to develop new building techniques and materials. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Elevated Forest Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/columbia-river-valley-lookout.md) - [Floating River Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-river-cabin.md) - [Tranquil A‑Frame Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/steel-a-frame.md) - [Angular Getaway Cabin Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/halfmoon-bay.md) - [Captivating Modern Prefab Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/skali-backcountry-cubiod.md) - [Off-Grid Forest Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-nest-cabin.md) - [X-Shaped Nature-Interacting Gabled Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fowl-river-cabin.md) - [Elevated Treetop Modern Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/buitenverblijf-nest.md) - [Waterside Retreat Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bora-boral.md)
