# Deadly Sports World's Most Dangerous Sporting Event By Cool Hunter | Published 2006-07-26 | Autos Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/deadly-sports-worlds-most-dangerous-sporting-event References: [gizmag](http://www.gizmag.com/go/3613/) The days of the [gladiator](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ultimate-gladiator-experience) may be over, but dozens of [ultra high risk sports](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lt-games) are on the rise, including: BASE Jumping, Free Diving, Cave Diving, Speed Skiing and Street Luging. However, the MOST dangerous sport, is the Granada Dakar [off-road rally](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/liquid-death-and-nascar), which claims two lives per race. "It's the world's most dangerous legally-sanctioned sporting event. Every time the event is run, on average, two competitors and an unknown number of spectators die. With an entourage the size of a small city, the Dakar Rally streaks for 16 days and 9000 kilometres across several countries and time zones at frightening speeds. One of the most significant events in the history of motorsport, it has direct lineage to the first auto race and all the famous city-to-city races which were banned between 50 and 100 years ago due to the carnage. So why is it still running?" - Giz Magazine ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.0/10 - Popularity: 82% | Activity: 90% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Autos](https://www.trendhunter.com/autos) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **High-risk Sports Industry:** Disruptive innovation opportunities could include developing new safety equipment and gear for athletes, researching and developing new safety protocols, creating virtual reality experiences to train athletes on safety measures in high-risk sports. - **Adrenaline Tourism:** Disruptive innovation opportunities could include developing new extreme sports destinations and experiences, creating health and safety training programs to mitigate risks, and investing in medical facilities and infrastructure in remote and high-risk sports locations. - **Emerging Technologies in Sports:** Disruptive innovation opportunities could include using drones to monitor and regulate safety measures in high-risk sports, developing smart equipment and wearables to improve safety and performance, and creating virtual reality and augmented reality experiences for better training and risk assessment for extreme athletes. ### Who This Affects Most - **Sports Equipment Industry:** Disruptive innovation opportunities could include developing new safety equipment and gear for extreme sports athletes, researching and developing new materials and technologies to improve equipment safety, and creating smart equipment that can monitor athletes' physical data and provide real-time insights for optimal performance and safety. - **Sports Medicine Industry:** Disruptive innovation opportunities could include investing in medical facilities and infrastructure in remote and high-risk sport locations, using emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and virtual reality to improve diagnosis and treatment protocols, and developing new drugs and therapies to mitigate risks and improve recovery for extreme athletes. - **Adventure Tourism Industry:** Disruptive innovation opportunities could include creating new and safer extreme sports destinations and experiences, developing health and safety training programs for tourists and athletes, and exploring ways to minimize negative environmental impacts and promote sustainable tourism practices in high-risk and remote locations. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Record-Breaking Skate Megaramps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/red-bulls-building-drop.md) - [Inaugural Demanding Fitness Competitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/worlds-toughest-mile.md) - [High-Speed Electric Dirtbikes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stark-varg.md) - [Geography-Based Esports Competitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/geoguessr.md) - [Desert Competition SUV Models](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/land-rover-dakar-rally-defender.md) - [Ultra-Powerful Luxury SUVs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dbx707.md) - [Ultra-Advanced Sports Cars](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/koenigsegg-sadairs-spear.md) - [Powered Hyper-Speed Surfboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xsport-jetboard.md) - [Racing-Inspired Board Games](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lacorsa-grand-prix-game.md)
