# Matchstick Sculptures David Mach Creates Fiery Works of Art By Michael Hines | Published 2010-06-17 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/david-mach References: [odditycentral](http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/the-matchstick-art-of-david-mach.html) & [denoirmont](http://www.denoirmont.com/portfolio-artiste-david-mach-galerie-jerome-de-noirmont.html#close) Artist David Mach has found a way to turn matchsticks into beautiful works of art. His [matchstick sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/match-house) take on the form of revolutionary leaders, animals and even religious deities. David Mach uses thousands of [colored matches imported from Japan](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nakajimaya-crossing) to construct his sculptures. He sells the finished products for anywhere from $30,000 to $52,000. The ones he can't sell he simply sets on fire. **Implications** - Now if that isn't the most fatalist piece of decision-making I've ever heard, I don't know what is. But you have to respect an artist with that kind of conviction. David Mach is the definition of 'go big or go home.' ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.8/10 - Popularity: 89% | Activity: 48% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Matchstick Art:** Exploring the use of matchsticks as a medium for creating intricate sculptures, offering a unique and visually compelling form of artistic expression. - **Fire Sculptures:** Discovering the dramatic and ephemeral art of creating sculptures out of matchsticks, embracing the temporary nature of the medium. - **Imported Matchstick Market:** Examining the demand for quality imported matchsticks in the art industry, presenting an opportunity for suppliers to cater to the needs of artists and sculptors. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art:** Exploring the potential for matchstick sculptures to disrupt the art world, challenging traditional materials and techniques. - **Sculpture:** Investigating the innovative use of matchsticks as a sculptural medium, creating opportunities for artists to experiment with new materials and processes. - **Import/export:** Exploring the potential growth of the import/export industry for matchsticks, driven by the demand from artists, sculptors, and craftsmen who require high-quality materials. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Fire-Inspired Artful Candelabras](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forge-candelabra.md) - [Chess-Themed Art Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/checkmate-collection.md) - [Digital Archetype Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/christian-rex-van-minnen-1.md) - [Explosion-Damaged Sculpture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/light-into-darkness.md) - [Striking Sculptural Candles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculpture-candle.md) - [Limited-Edition Artistic Candles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/michle-lamy.md) - [Geometric Wooden Art Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aleph-geddis.md) - [Wooden Identity Art Forms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hughmanity.md) - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md)
