# Masterful Intricate Wood Carvings David Esterly Creates Life-Like Sculptures Out of Limewood By Meghan Young | Published 2013-01-21 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/david-esterly References: [bookofjoe](http://www.bookofjoe.com/2013/01/meet-david-esterly-the-best-woodcarver-in-the-world.html) & [davidesterly](http://davidesterly.com/) David Esterly is perhaps the best wood carver in the world. He is certainly one of the only wood carvers creating original high-relief works today, as per Ellen Gamerman of [Wall Street Journal's](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/immersive-surfaces) article. In fact, it is hard to believe that some of David Esterly's sculptures are actually sculptures. So incredibly detailed, they look like the violins, rosebuds and even [iPod](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/repod-c1) earbuds that they are made to look like. Living in upstate New York, David Esterly recently opened his first Manhattan gallery earlier this month. Held at the W. M. Brady & Co., all of the work that is on display have been carved out of limewood. Starting with a pencil sketch, David Esterly then fleshes out his drawing on Adobe Illustrator before making a mark on the wood itself. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.1/10 - Popularity: 66% | Activity: 48% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Original High-relief Works:** The trend of creating original high-relief sculptures opens up opportunities for artists to push the boundaries of traditional wood carving. - **Incredibly Detailed Sculptures:** The trend of creating incredibly detailed sculptures presents disruptive innovation opportunities for artists to showcase their mastery of craftsmanship and realism in wood carving. - **Wood Carving with Modern Technology:** The trend of combining traditional wood carving techniques with modern technology, such as digital sketches on Adobe Illustrator, allows for greater precision and intricacy in carving designs. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art Galleries:** The art gallery industry can explore showcasing and promoting original high-relief sculptures as a unique selling point to attract art enthusiasts. - **Fine Arts Education:** The fine arts education industry can incorporate the teaching of incredibly detailed wood carving techniques to provide aspiring artists with new avenues to express their creativity. - **Woodworking Tools and Supplies:** The woodworking tools and supplies industry can develop and market specialized tools and materials that assist artists in achieving greater precision and intricacy in their wood carving projects. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md) - [Wooden Light-Hearted Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dream-sculpture.md) - [Repurposed Wooden Vessels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/darren-appiagyei.md) - [Wooden Identity Art Forms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hughmanity.md) - [Geometric Sculpture Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/illusion-box.md) - [Artful Wooden Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knowledge-of-all-dark-things.md) - [Time-Layered Wood Displays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/age-of-wood.md) - [Intricate Jigsaw Puzzles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/intricate-jigsaw-puzzle.md) - [Sculptural Wooden Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/out-of-the-blue-exhibition.md)
