The trucks that will undergo testing will have Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, and the tests will be conducted on roads in southwest Virginia. The Daimler self-driving trucks will be tested with a driver present who can take control of the vehicle if necessary. As well an engineer will be monitoring the autonomous trucks. Beginning testing on public roads is a significant mark of progress for Daimler. The company had previously made a public promise to begin testing its autonomous trucks in 2019.
