# Quirky Cabinet Staircases This Parisian Apartment Features a Cupboard Staircase By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-07-28 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cupboard-staircase References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2014/07/28/schemaa-micro-apartment-paris-bookshelf-staircase/) & [schemaa.fr](http://www.schemaa.fr/) French architecture firm Schemaa optimized for space in a [Parisian apartment](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bergre-paris-ix) by installing a [cupboard staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cobalt-coach-house). By doubling as a storage space, the wooden staircase frees up square footage, while also providing an interesting visual addition to the interior. Underneath the staircase you can find another rack of shelves, ensuring that the room stays clutter-free. In the event that even more space is required, the dining table can be dismantled and mounted on the wall. The cupboards, which are a range of different heights, can also be easily disguised when the doors are shut, as they are the same width as the stair treads. Located in the living and dining area, the staircase features the same type of wood as the kitchen units, creating a unity throughout the entire apartment. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.8/10 - Popularity: 92% | Activity: 74% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Multi-functional Staircases:** Opportunity to create staircases that double as storage spaces to optimize small living spaces. - **Disguised Storage Solutions:** Opportunity to design cupboards that blend seamlessly with the surroundings when doors are shut. - **Modular Furniture:** Opportunity to create furniture pieces that can be easily dismantled and mounted on walls to save space. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** Opportunity for architects to incorporate innovative storage solutions into building designs. - **Interior Design:** Opportunity for interior designers to create furniture pieces that combine functionality with aesthetics. - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Opportunity for furniture manufacturers to develop modular furniture solutions for small living spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Reimagined Minimal Parisian Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-cocoon.md) - [Sculptural Townhome Staircases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atelier-pierre-thibault-1.md) - [Bold Architectural Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-iron-house.md) - [Cleverly Designed Micro Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cabanon.md) - [Playful Rotating Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/giralot-rotating-storage.md) - [Dutch Barn Spiralled Staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/julia-van-beuningen.md) - [Sculptural Staircase Penthouses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frederic-chopin.md) - [Fold-Out Furniture London Flats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/florin-court-flat.md) - [Apartment-Inspired Drawer Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/apt-drawers.md)
