[ALDI](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hop-foundry) has announced the trialling of crownless pineapples in a bid to help reduce food waste by eliminating the fruit's signature spiky top that often gets tossed away by consumers. The trial will see the crowns on the pineapples removed as a way to cultivate the next year's crop or processed into animal feed as a way to greatly reduce the waste associated with the fruit. The trial is estimated by the brand to reduce food waste by 1,400 tonnes on a yearly basis if the change is adopted at all of the retailer's locations.

ALDI National Sustainability Director Liz Fox spoke on the crownless pineapples trial saying, "At Aldi, we are committed to finding sustainable solutions that benefit both our customers and the environment. This trial of crownless pineapples is just one of the latest innovative changes we’re testing out to minimise waste and reduce our carbon footprint.”
