While most people use microwaves to heat up food, these researchers are using them to detect corrosion in concrete. The [National Institute of Standards and Technology](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cellular-transport) (NIST) are looking for evidence of corroded iron and steel deep inside concrete like doctors would use [x-rays and electromagnetic radiation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/3d-xray) to find broken bones in bodies.

Researchers have discovered that terahertz radiation, which is ten to 100 times higher in frequency than the electromagnetic waves we use for food microwaves, can find early stages of corrosion in concrete. Previous methods could only search for corrosion that was already well-developed.

This scientific and technological development is similar to other sensor technology being used in a wide variety of industries, from intelligent medical dressing to fishing lures.
