Corephonotics, a company spun off of Israel's Tel Aviv Univesity, has developed a smartphone camera that uses the combined output of [two compact lenses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rollei-powerflex-x8-dual-lens). This enables actual zooming of the camera, unlike most phone cameras which don't actually zoom but simply enlarge the pixels, resulting in grainy photos.

The Corephotonics smartphone camera has a [wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amkov-f3b), each of which is equipped with its own sensor. Data from the two sensors is blended by on-board software to produce a single composite image. The camera also offers improved low-light performance along with four times the resolution of a run-of-the-mill smartphone camera.

Phones featuring the Corephotonics camera system are expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2015.
