The Foothills Hospital in the city of Calgary in Canada is making use of an innovative portable cooling device that is designed to mitigate brain damage in vulnerable babies.

This cooling device is specifically designed to help babies who were deprived of oxygen at birth, something that can lead to brain damage. The portable contraption puts these babies in a state of controlled hypothermia by reducing their body temperature, thereby helping to stop brain damage in its tracks. The device costs $35,000, and is attached to a transportable cart that can easily be moved around.

Considering that hundreds and possibly thousands of babies every year suffer the risk of oxygen deprivation-induced brain damage, this portable cooling device is an immeasurably important device thanks to its ability to empower doctors to utilize therapeutic hypothermia.
