# Convertible Chair Shelves Power Chair By Pearl | Published 2008-05-31 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/convertible-chair-shelf-power-chair References: [designboom](http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/8/view/2957/powerchair-by-guillaume-drapier-2008.html) & [guillaumedrapier](http://www.guillaumedrapier.com/) This is a piece of furniture that can be three different things, a series of chairs for a family of four whose members are of neatly descending height, a nifty shelving unit with built in coat rack or just an arty jumble of wooden puzzle pieces! **Guillaume Drapier**, a designer at the Royal College of Art in London (UK) calls his American oak chair a **powerchair** because, “*Without resistance, no power is possible*”. The line is taken from a quotation by Michel Foucault that Drapier added to his website. You can see why: his set of chairs all rely on each other to stay together as chairs. They can be arranged leaning against each other forming a short staircase made of chairs as each is of a different height. Or they can be stacked one on top of the other to form a clever multi-shelved cupboard with a coat rack formed from the upright portions of each chair. Fun and functional art furniture for a foyer. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.6/10 - Popularity: 11% | Activity: 29% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Convertible Furniture:** The trend of convertible furniture presents opportunities for innovative designs that offer multiple functionalities in one piece. - **Modular Design:** The trend of modular design allows for customizable and versatile furniture solutions that can adapt to different spaces and needs. - **Artistic Functional Furniture:** The trend of artistic functional furniture combines aesthetic appeal with practicality, offering unique and eye-catching pieces. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture Manufacturing:** The furniture manufacturing industry can explore innovative approaches to create convertible furniture designs that cater to changing consumer preferences. - **Interior Design:** The interior design industry can leverage modular design concepts to create flexible and adaptable spaces that meet the evolving needs of users. - **Art and Decor:** The art and decor industry can embrace the trend of artistic functional furniture to offer distinctive and visually appealing pieces that enhance interior aesthetics. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Storage-Attached Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grid-chair.md) - [Flatpack Ultra-Modular Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nebula-chair.md) - [Recycled Scissor-Like Folding Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fauld-chair.md) - [Table-Equipped Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/migo-chair.md) - [Modular Chromatic Child Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kidzilla-chair.md) - [Storage-Friendly Origami Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-kerf.md) - [Transforming Child Stool Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flipflap-childrens-chair.md) - [Flatpack Single-Piece Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/leaning-chair-set.md) - [Expanding Three-in-One Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/expandy.md)
