# Layered Topographical Loungers The Contour Sofa's Shape is Carved by Stacked Cushions By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-05-21 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contour-sofa References: [designspotter](http://www.designspotter.com/product/2012/05/Contour-Sofa.html) & [furnituredesignmarket](http://furnituredesignmarket.com/index.php?id=174&status=2&type=1) Different from your run-of-the-mill chesterfield, the Contour Sofa gets its plushy form from padding stacked vertically into armrests and a backrest, rather than applied on the sides. The uncommon method has actually allowed designer Danilo Cvjetkovic to sculpt [ergonomic curves into the couch](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smooth-sofa), accommodating forward-facing and side-seated positions. Another feature created through this layered composition is a small footrest below the main pad. It lets you get nice and cozy within the [eccentric piece of furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/poet-sofa), sheltered on three sides by wrap-around cushioning. Made of fabric and leather, the Contour Sofa seems like it would make for the perfect place for an afternoon nap, with its structure much like that of a [comfy day bed](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knoll-perron-pillo). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.5/10 - Popularity: 50% | Activity: 18% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Layered Cushion Furniture:** Creating sculptural furniture designs with layered cushioning presents opportunities for ergonomic innovation. - **Vertical Padding:** Stacking padding elements vertically creates unique shapes and features in furniture design. - **Wrap-around Comfort:** Wrap-around cushioning provides a cozy and ergonomic seating experience that could be applied to a variety of furniture designs. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Design:** Layered cushioning and vertical padding provide opportunities for disruption and innovation in the furniture design industry. - **Interior Design:** Layered cushioning and wrap-around comfort could be applied to a wide range of seating options for interior design. - **Hospitality:** The use of wrap-around cushioning and unique shapes could provide a differentiated and memorable seating experience for hotels, resorts, and other hospitality destinations. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Plush Sculptural Lounge Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rokko.md) - [High-Back Embracing Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cozmo-hug.md) - [Organically Shaped Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/repose-sofa.md) - [Ribbed-Cushioned Couches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/note-design.md) - [Enveloping Sofa Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/perron-pillo.md) - [Flexible Landscape-Like Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/airberg-sofa-collection.md) - [Curved Bed-Inspired Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/velar-sofa.md) - [Modular Minimalist Sofa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/zonatta-bumper-sofa.md) - [Voluptuous Texture Sofa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bretz-balaao.md)
