# Modern Garden Retreats This Contemporary Backyard Studio Provides Solitude in an Urban Metropolis By Katherine Pendrill | Published 2016-03-23 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contemporary-backyard-studio References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2016/03/23/nicholas-hunt-architecture-tiny-studio-retreat-brooklyn-garden-usa/) & [hunt-architecture](http://www.hunt-architecture.com/project-3/) Nicholas Hunt recently completed a contemporary backyard studio that provides solitude in the heart of New York City. With yard space a rarity in many urban centers, this architect has found a way to turn a [tiny garden](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garden-office) into a homey getaway. The [Brooklyn Garden Studio](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shirley-chisholm-recreation-center) is a tiny dwelling located in the backyard of a ground-level apartment. The building encompasses 55 square feet, making it the perfect size for reading or taking a nap. Because it is detached from the home itself, the dwelling provides a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle or city life. To keep the contemporary backyard studio simple, Hunt chose clean and simple finishes such as wooden walls and salvaged cedar siding. The dwelling even boasts an angled roof that allows rainwater to gently fall off of the top and down the side walls. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.0/10 - Popularity: 96% | Activity: 76% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Tiny Garden Dwellings:** Adapt small outdoor spaces into unique and secluded living areas. - **Urban Retreats:** Create peaceful and calming spaces in the midst of busy urban areas. - **Sustainable Architecture:** Incorporate eco-friendly elements into modern designs for sustainable living. ### Where This Applies - **Real Estate:** Offer unique and sustainable living spaces for buyers in crowded urban areas. - **Architecture:** Develop modern design solutions for cramped outdoor areas in urban environments. - **Construction:** Provide eco-friendly building materials and methods for small-scale urban living projects. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Simplistic Tranquil Garden Studios](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tuinhuis-atelier.md) - [Compact Cozy Garden Studios](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bush-studio.md) - [Corten-Clad Garden Studios](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garden-studio-1.md) - [Cozy Gaden Cabin Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garden-pavilion.md) - [Elevated Garden Lofts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/attic-above-garden.md) - [Spacious Backyard Studio Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/urban-park-studio.md) - [Dual-Workspace Backyard Sheds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/workshed.md) - [Juxtaposing Garden Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garden-garage.md) - [Artistic Lakeside Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ely-retreat.md)
