# Optical Illusion Shelving The Concave Bookcase by Joined + Jointed Seems Out of the 'Matrix' By Meghan Young | Published 2013-09-24 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/concave-bookcase References: [trendir](http://www.trendir.com/archives/006861.html) & [joinedandjointed](http://joinedandjointed.com/) The Concave Bookcase looks like something that was created for the 'Matrix' trilogy. The film is known for its reality bending scenes and that is exactly how these [shelving units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/qurv) could be described. Yet the Concave Bookcase's [illusory existence](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moving-furniture) is due entirely to its design and not the idea that the world is simply a fabricated reality. Designed by Simon Pengelly of Joined + Jointed, a design collective based in London, England, the Concave Bookcase appears to bend outwards. When flanking interior of a living room, it gives the perception that a person is gazing at the scene through a fish eye camera lens. Although relatively simple, the Concave Bookcase has been transformed from a [utilitarian piece of furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookmarker-table) into something a lot more exciting and mysterious. It is made out of walnut. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.2/10 - Popularity: 93% | Activity: 86% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Illusion Furniture:** There is potential for manufacturers to design more furniture pieces that use optical illusions to create surprising effects. - **Multi-function Design:** Designers can innovate products that serve more than one purpose, such as furniture that is both decorative and functional, like the Concave Bookcase. - **Experimental Materials:** Using innovative materials in furniture design can create pieces that are unique and draw attention, such as the walnut used in the Concave Bookcase. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Companies that produce furniture can incorporate optical illusions, multi-function design, and experimental materials into their products to differentiate themselves in the market. - **Interior Decoration:** Interior designers can use illusion furniture to create visually dynamic spaces that make a statement. - **Home Improvement:** Retailers that specialize in home improvement products can stock illusion furniture to cater to customers who enjoy unusual and creative pieces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Twisting Donut-Shaped Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hullabaloo-bookshelf.md) - [Video Game-Like Bookcases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tetris-bookcase.md) - [Twisting CGI-Designed Sideboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookscrew-sideboard.md) - [Curvaceous Floating Illusion Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wave-collection-2.md) - [Book-Storing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookgroove-bookrack.md) - [Sculptural Bookshelves Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-bookshelf.md) - [Optical Illusion Mirrors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hooptical.md) - [Sliding Wintery Landscape Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manhwabang-bookshelf.md) - [Minimalist Bookish Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimal-bookshelf.md)
