# Black and White Energy Savers Thermeleon Color-Changing Roof Tiles Change Color, Save Money By Jessica Marcel | Published 2009-10-18 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/color-changing-roof-tiles References: [livescience](http://www.livescience.com/technology/091015-heat-tiles.html) & [web.mit.edu](http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2009/madmec-roof.html) Recent [MIT](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/3dprinted-trusses) graduates have devised an ingeniously simple way to save money on energy: Thermeleon color-changing roof tiles. When it’s cool, the tiles turn black, absorbing more of the sun’s warmth. When it’s hot, the tiles turn white, reflecting the extra heat away. With that simple transition, Thermeleon color-changing roof tiles could be a natural addition to green homes. The white tiles could save 20 percent of cooling costs. That’s a significant [energy savings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sunny-by-uncharted), and all from a simple idea. And we have to give props to the MIT übernerds who came up with “Thermeleon” color-changing roof tiles. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.8/10 - Popularity: 33% | Activity: 42% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Color-changing Roof Tiles:** Color-changing roof tiles that absorb or reflect heat based on temperature, providing energy savings for green homes. - **Energy Saving Technology:** Ingenious innovations that save energy and reduce cooling costs, such as Thermeleon color-changing roof tiles. - **Green Building Materials:** The development of sustainable building materials, like color-changing roof tiles, that contribute to energy efficiency. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** The architecture industry can incorporate color-changing roof tiles into green building designs to optimize energy efficiency. - **Construction:** The construction industry can utilize Thermeleon color-changing roof tiles for energy-saving solutions in building projects. - **Renewable Energy:** The renewable energy sector can explore color-changing roof tiles as a way to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Climate-Responsive Color-Changing Paints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/colorchanging-paint-1.md) - [Squid-Inspired Smart Windows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/liquidfilled-panel.md) - [Heritage Building-Blending Solar Panels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/invisible-solar.md) - [Cooling Rooftop Ads](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/coors-light-chillboards.md) - [Cooling Vehicle Paint Technology](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paint-technology.md) - [Car Color-Changing Technology](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/car-color-changing-technology.md) - [Energy-Saving Artistically Contoured Ceilings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contoured-ceiling.md) - [Thermoregulating Car Cloaks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/car-cloak.md) - [Honeycomb-Inspired Terracotta Walls](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beehive-system.md)
