# Festive Astronaut Installations ‘Poetic Kinetic’ Designed an Enormous Astronaut for Coachella 2014 By Megan Facciuolo | Published 2014-04-18 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/coachella-2014 References: [stupidDOPE](http://stupidDOPE.com/2014/04/17/coachellas-ginormous-astronaut-sculpture/) & [poetickinetics](http://poetickinetics.com/) Coachella 2014 is only halfway through and it has already offered up some amazing events and art. One of the most notable and biggest displays so far is a huge astronaut that hovers over the crowds. The spaceman was created by Poetic Kinetic, a Los Angeles-based company that creates robot-like structures. This astronaut, called ‘Escape Velocity,’ is definitely one of its luckier creations because it gets to “see” some of the most popular bands in the world perform. The 36-foot tall sculpture features radio-controlled animatronics that gives it the ability to make lifelike gestures like sticking out the peace sign or giving a thumbs up. It also projects video footage of the festival goers from its helmet. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.5/10 - Popularity: 24% | Activity: 13% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Festive Astronaut Installations:** Creating larger-than-life astronaut installations for festivals and events, providing an immersive experience for attendees. - **Kinetic Sculptures:** Designing and building kinetic sculptures that incorporate robotics and animatronics for interactive installations. - **Projection Mapping:** Using projection mapping technology to enhance large-scale sculptures with video and interactive visuals. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Event Planning:** Incorporating kinetic and interactive sculptures to create unique and memorable experiences for attendees at festivals and events. - **Art Installations:** Creating large-scale kinetic and robotic sculptures for public and private art installations that engage and captivate audiences. - **Projection Technology:** Developing new uses for projection technology, such as enhancing sculptures with interactive and immersive visuals. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Music Festival Fabric Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fabric-mushrooms.md) - [Inflatable Vibrant Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forest-dancer.md) - [Inflatable-Orb Stage Set Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/whomadewho.md) - [Large-Scale Sculpture Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/desert-x1.md) - [Festive Light Painting Techniques](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/light-painting-1.md) - [Cosmic Beverage Activations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/celsius-energy.md) - [Limited-Edition Astronaut Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/limitededition-astronaut-sculpture.md) - [Space-Exploration Artful Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kosmos-exhibition.md) - [Immersive Space Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beyond-the-light.md)
