# Beautiful Butch Buildings The Clyfford Still Museum is a Simple Yet Imposing Structure By Meghan Young | Published 2011-08-19 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clyfford-still-museum References: [fastcodesign](http://www.fastcodesign.com/1664805/first-look-butch-and-beautiful-the-clyfford-still-museum-nears-opening#6) & [clyffordstillmuseum.org](http://www.clyffordstillmuseum.org/) The Clyfford Still Museum embodies the tough-guy persona that the artist of the same name often displayed. Since it is dedicated to the art work of [abstract-expressionist Clyfford Still](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/studio-for-architecture), it is only appropriate that the building is instilled with the essence of his existence. Designed by architect Brad Cloepfil of Portland-based Allied Works Architecture, the Clyfford Still Museum sports a rough, [cast-in-place concrete facade](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/one-river-north) that perfectly complements Still's huge and jagged paintings. Although this beautiful butch building seems to have a rather simple design, its [bunker-like presence](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cold-war-museum-regan-vest) is quite impressive, and even daunting. Opening this fall, the Clyfford Still Museum will be home to a whopping 94% of Still's total creative output. The Clyfford Still Museum will definitely become a must-see attraction in Denver, Colorado. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.7/10 - Popularity: 76% | Activity: 57% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Minimalist Architecture:** Opportunity for innovative architects to create visually striking buildings with simple yet imposing designs. - **Artistic Integration:** Potential for artists and architects to collaborate in creating buildings that showcase and complement artwork. - **Destination Museums:** Growing trend of museums becoming major tourist attractions, presenting opportunities for cultural and economic growth. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Architects can leverage minimalist design principles to create captivating buildings that stand out. - **Art:** Artists and architects can collaborate to integrate art into architectural designs, enhancing the overall aesthetic experience. - **Tourism:** Museums that offer unique and captivating experiences can attract tourists, benefiting the local economy. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Art Museum Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xiao-feng-art-museum.md) - [White Concrete Boxy Museums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/museum-of-modern-art.md) - [Slim Concrete-Framed Museums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dday-museum.md) - [Dual Level Concrete Galleries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crow-museum-of-asian-art.md) - [Sculptural Museum Expansions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diller-scofidio-renfro1.md) - [Beautifully Sculptural Concrete Museums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lusail-museum.md) - [Commercial-Transformed Artful Galleries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/canyon-1.md) - [Color-Shifting Art Museums](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-quartet-songzhuang-z-museum.md) - [Cantilevered Mountain Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brutal-honesty.md)
