# Translucent Metallic Pavilions The Cloud Pavilion is a Shimmering Glass and Metal Structure By Joey Haar | Published 2016-08-17 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cloud-pavilion References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2016/08/16/schmidt-hammer-lassen-architects-cloud-pavilion-events-space-riverside-west-bund-shanghai/) & [shl.dk](http://www.shl.dk/shanghai-west-bund-biennale/) The '[Cloud Pavilion](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-cloud-house)' is a structure on the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River designed by Shmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, a Danish firm. The dazzling structure is a [rectangular pavilion](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-round-pavilion) ensconced in thin chrome sheets of metal and a curvaceous bubble of glass. The Cloud Pavilion's mirrored metal columns, as well as the polished aluminum that covers the ceiling, will attracted passersby from a distance, but the building gains its name from the glass on the inside. The curving inner room's outline traces the pattern of a cartoon cloud, like those taught to preschoolers in art class. In the evening, a diffused light that covers the entirety of the [glass room's ceiling](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-capsule-in-time) is turned on, creating the image of a bright white cloud against the night sky. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.1/10 - Popularity: 72% | Activity: 44% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Translucent Structures:** Opportunity for architects and designers to create innovative buildings that utilize translucent materials for aesthetic appeal and visual impact. - **Reflective Design:** Potential for incorporating mirrors and metal surfaces into architectural designs to create eye-catching and dazzling structures. - **Interactive Lighting:** Emerging trend of using lighting effects to enhance the visual experience of interior spaces and create immersive environments. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** Architects can explore new possibilities with translucent materials and reflective surfaces to create unique and captivating structures. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can incorporate interactive lighting techniques to enhance the ambiance and visual interest of indoor spaces. - **Structural Engineering:** Structural engineers can collaborate with architects to develop innovative ways to effectively utilize translucent materials in building designs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Lake-Overlooking Tiled Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jinji-lake-pavilion.md) - [Lunar-Based Rotating Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moon-pavilion.md) - [Romantic Seaside Pier Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/seaside-pavilion.md) - [Black-Timber Stealthy Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dropstop.md) - [Interactive Architectural Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-landscape.md) - [Light Filtered Glulam Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paviljong-rosendal.md) - [Glass-Walled Shanghai Cafes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mei-yuan-cafe.md) - [Ice Block-Formed Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/falling-hours.md) - [Illuminating Water-Based Pavillions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelter-pavilion.md)
