# Draped Metal Dining Tables Cloth Table Playfully Challenges the Rigid Properties of Solid Material By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-08-09 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cloth-table References: [behance.net](http://www.behance.net/gallery/cloth-table/3343329) The enthralling sculpture that is the Cloth Table could not be recreated in a softer material, despite the fact that the piece is meant to loosely represent the behavior of [fabric drapery](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cloud-tables1). A rectangular panel that perfectly fits the prismic frame of the furnishing has been filleted for rounded corners and seemingly shifted askew. Now each of the four extremities of the flat surface cantilever beyond the stiff border of the boxy structure. Instead of extending with a constant firmness, these extruding edges actually take 90-degree folds and look to droop towards the floor. Of course, if the [metal top](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sharp-table) was genuinely malleable, Artem Zigert's Cloth Table would sag in the center as well. This [impossible material reaction](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/siembra-capsule) is what makes the object so compelling. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.0/10 - Popularity: 21% | Activity: 31% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Malleable Metal Furniture:** Innovative use of metal materials to create furniture that appears malleable and defies expectations. - **Sculptural Furniture Design:** Furniture design that prioritizes the aesthetic value and sculptural qualities of the piece rather than just functionality. - **Playful Furniture:** Furniture that challenges the rigidity of traditional materials and creates a playful interaction between object and user. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** Manufacturers and designers of furniture can explore new ways to create unique, sculptural pieces that challenge traditional material properties. - **Artistic Home Decor:** Companies that specialize in artistic and unique home decor can incorporate sculptural furniture designs into their product offerings. - **Materials Science:** Research and development teams in materials science can explore possibilities for new, malleable metal alloys that could revolutionize the furniture industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Undulating Fabric-Topped Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/groove-table-concept.md) - [Metal Sheet Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twist-side-table.md) - [Dynamic Sculptural Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-transformation-table.md) - [Japandi-Style Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cloth-coffee-table.md) - [Artwork-Inspired Dining Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/d12-dining-table.md) - [Wavy Sculptural Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-coffee-tables.md) - [Shimmering Oceanic Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/liquid-table.md) - [Blurred Bold Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blur-coffee-table.md) - [Elegant Table Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tangent-table.md)
