# Bark-Backed Escritoires The City Desk by Susana Martinez Juxtaposes Natural and Industrial By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-04-24 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/city-desk-by-susana-martinez References: [designspotter](http://www.designspotter.com/product/2013/04/City.html) & [estellesdesign](http://www.estellesdesign.com/92995/959720/home/city) The City Desk by Susana Martinez is the sort of piece that you certainly would not want to push up against a wall. This workstation has been designed to sit someplace in the middle of a room, providing its very own [privacy partition](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/canopy-desk) and a beautiful two-faced design. Ideally, one might approach this furnishing from the rear so that its gorgeous wooden panel is in full view. This expansive piece seems to have been sliced from the core of a very old tree trunk, maintaining uneven edges and exposing its [natural wood grain patterns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/don-heston-studio) and varying timber tones. But counterbalancing this organic feature of the City Desk is an industrial opposite side. This an [extruded writing surface](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/single-desk) of lacquered metal, supported by a frames and enhanced with a shelf, a cubby and a built-in floor lamp. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.0/10 - Popularity: 45% | Activity: 8% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Nature-inspired Workstations:** Opportunity for furniture designers to incorporate natural elements into office furniture designs. - **Dual-faced Furniture:** An opportunity to create furniture that is multi-functional and has a unique design that comes with two sides. - **Privacy Partitions:** Opportunity for designers to create furniture that provides privacy in open-plan workspaces. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** Designers should consider using this trend in their office furniture designs. - **Office Supplies:** Manufacturers can provide complementary products to enhance the functionality of furniture pieces like this. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers should consider incorporating dual-faced furniture in their projects to add a unique design element. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sleek Storage-Packed Workstations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/threesix-desk.md) - [Minimalist Monochromatic Desk Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arqus-desk.md) - [Hyper-Customizable Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hypercustomizable-desk.md) - [Minimalist Demure Designer Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/backup-desk.md) - [Minimalist Storage-Paired Workstations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diag-desk.md) - [Elegant Working Desk Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mindset-builtin-computer-desk.md) - [Sculptural Wall Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-wall-desk.md) - [Ergonomic Multi-Use Desk Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kabinett-desk.md) - [Fold-Out WFH Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/writing-bureau.md)
