Researchers at the [University of Glasgow](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hydrogen-based-energy-systems) and the [University of Massachusetts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/simulated-living-cells) have developed the super-fast Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip that will make PCs twenty times faster than normal computers.

The scientists used the FPGA chip and turned it into a 1,000-core processor, enabling it to process around five gigabytes of data a second. This breakthrough technology is expected to be displayed at the [International Symposium on Applied Reconfigurable Computing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carrefour-and-vusion) in March, 2011.

**Implications** - As the developing speed of technology continues to quicken, consumers are become more tech-savvy and more eager to adopt new hardware. Engineering breakthroughs that allow faster, more diverse processes are virtual lottery tickets in the computer industry and appeal to just about everyone.
