# Scenic Landfill Imagery These Chinese Landscape Photographs Feature Garbage Dumps By Gil Cohen | Published 2013-02-21 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chinese-landscape References: [beautifuldecay](http://beautifuldecay.com/2013/02/19/beautiful-chinese-landscapes-are-actually-photographs-of-landfills/) & [brucesilverstein](http://www.brucesilverstein.com/artist/213/Yao-Lu) Deceptively beautiful and traditional-looking, these images that appear to be of a beautiful Chinese landscape are actually full of garbage. Artist Yao Lu imparts a message that the massive landfills in China have become a part of the scenery, changing the actual layout of the view and the land around them. Using [digital manipulation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1) to tweak the photographs and make them look more like paintings, the artist captures [mountains of trash](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sungai-carafe) covered in green protective nets that have an ethereal and almost mystical appearance to them. Contrasting traditional artwork with modern realities, Yao Lu is demonstrating the difference between then and now, emphasizing the scale of the ecological and urban changes in China today. The Chinese landscape has been permanently altered by mass amounts of garbage in its ever expanding landfills. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.9/10 - Popularity: 72% | Activity: 37% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Modern Waste Management:** Transforming traditional waste disposal methods to more efficient and eco-friendly alternatives. - **Art as Awareness:** Artists using their artwork as a mode of communication to bring awareness and attention to environmental concerns. - **Sustainable Landscaping:** Incorporating sustainable and eco-friendly landscape designs and materials to reduce the impact of landfills on the environment. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Waste Management:** Developing innovative solutions to reduce waste and optimize waste disposal methods. - **Fine Arts:** Utilizing and integrating modern technology in traditional art forms to create thought-provoking pieces that reflect contemporary social and environmental issues. - **Landscaping:** Making use of sustainable practices to design and maintain outdoor spaces that serve as an ecological and aesthetic asset to the community. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [AI-Generated Real-World Transformations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ai-generated-world.md) - [Future-Facing Sculptural Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/eye-of-the-future.md) - [Large-Scale Sculpture Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/desert-x1.md) - [Stone-Like Discreet Glass Viewpoints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drifting-stones.md) - [Monumental Air Installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/iwagumi-air-scape.md) - [Mask-Made Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tidal-stories.md) - [Culture-Accommodating Quarries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cultural-space.md) - [Multi-Sensory Art Experiences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arcadia-earth-toronto-benjamin-von-wong.md) - [Interactive Architectural Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-landscape.md)
