# Pondside Passive Houses China Pond Passive House Meets Passive House Standards By Amy Duong | Published 2026-08-06 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/china-pond-passive-house References: [riverarchitects](https://www.riverarchitects.com/) The China Pond Passive House is a 400-square-metre residence by [River Architects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tgv-inoui) in Carmel, New York, designed to [Phius Passive House](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/west-don-ravine-passive-house) standards on a wooded 2.2-acre site overlooking a pond. Replacing an earlier home with a similar footprint, the residence is organized as two intersecting gabled volumes linked by a flat-roofed connector to reduce the perceived scale while creating varied interior and exterior spaces. Reclaimed cypress and Douglas fir wrap the structure above a native stone foundation, responding to the site's existing landscape and surrounding woodland. The interior arranges communal living areas around a central stone chimney, with private bedrooms positioned along the southern side and recreation spaces, a sauna, and outdoor access located on the lower level. A highly insulated airtight envelope, triple-pane glazing, strategic solar orientation, and exterior shading reduce energy demand while supporting indoor comfort. All-electric heat pumps, energy recovery ventilation, renewable energy infrastructure, and locally sourced materials contribute to the home's certified fossil-fuel-free performance and long-term operational efficiency.
